The gorilla with glasses bookclub started “The Will of the Many” by James Islington in July and ended up finishing the book in August. Thank you for your flexibility with the schedule. In September, the bookclub will be reading Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. I’m really excited for this one and I hope you join us. Below are some short reviews of the books I read through in July and August.
Wrapping up The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie with the exciting finale, “Last Argument of Kings“. The conclusion to this series was quite good. I really enjoyed the series as a whole and Last Argument of Kings was my favorite installment. With fully fleshed out characters, I felt the story moved faster and included more action sequences which I enjoyed. I also felt the action sequences throughout the series have felt quite realistic. I listened to this one on audio book and felt that Steven Pacey really brought the characters to life. Glokta and Logen were my favorite characters.
Starting off the Hierarchy series, “The Will of the Many” by James Islington introduces a variety of intriguing characters, unique magic system, and the Catenan Republic — a Roman Empire inspired setting and “vibe”. As a series opener, the Will of the Many checks many boxes. I think fans of the Red Rising series will really enjoy diving into this one.
Finally, I managed to take some time and read through a commonly recommended book, “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. I’m really glad I finally got around to reading this one. Simple principles for living that are difficult to execute. I found some of the spiritual explanations a little out-of-left-field and require further explanation. However, I think the principles are ostensibly relevant and I’ll be implementing them in my own life.
